Ghashghai Nomads
Gabbeh rugs are probably among the best-known hand-knotted oriental rugs in the world. They are knotted by the Ghashghai nomads of Iran. Local, hand-twisted wool is used, which is not degreased and is dyed at home with vegetable dyes as required. The colour palette consists of specific colours and the motifs used are traditional naïve and rustic motifs. The weft and warp are also made of wool, and a weft thread is pulled in after each knotted row, which makes the rug very robust.
This genuine nomadic rug cannot be compared with rugs made using mechanical weaving techniques and degreased wool. They are called Lori-Loom or Lori and can be offered at a favourable price due to their cheap weaving technique.
We have a collection of finer examples that have been handmade by special tribes as designer gabbeh with a lot of talent.
