Antique Persian Keshan silk, museum-quality piece, known as a ‘Polish’ carpet; these rare carpets were woven around 1700. One of the most famous Polish carpets was divided into two parts, with one half now in the Paris Museum of Art and the other in Kraków. This name was given to these carpets, which were knotted during the Safavid period (1502–1722) in royal workshops in Kashan and Isfahan; these carpets are also known as Shah Abbas carpets, named after Shah Abbas, a great patron of carpet art during the Safavid dynasty. In 1878, a Pole exhibited such a carpet at the Trocadero Palace in Paris. It was thus that these carpets have since been referred to as ‘pièces polonaises’ or Polish carpets. Fewer than 300 examples exist worldwide. These pieces were produced exclusively in the bridge format.
The pile of the carpet is made of silk and retains its relief. A collector’s item.
